charlotte's cool retro modern signs
Submitted by Gail Jodon on March 2, 2010 - 10:54pmFans of retro modern are not only keen for cool atomic ranches, vintage Dior dresses, cat eye glasses and“MadMen” on AMC. Vintage signs from the post modern era rank high on the list. Charlotte has some great mid-century era signs and Nonprofit Historic Charlotte, Inc. has partnered with Southern brew JFG coffee to help “Save Our Signs”.
Their goal is to get owners of vintage signs to register them as historic landmarks, helping protect them from demolition.
For those less familiar with the area’s vintage sings and the equally distinct businesses for which they were designed, HC, Inc is organizing the “Roadside Wonders Driving Tour” for preservation month in May.
Check out signs at Fuel Pizza on Central Avenue, the DQ on Wilkinson Blvd, the Knife & Fork Restaurant on Sharon Amity (gotta love it!). My personal favorites are the Park Rd Shopping Center and Park Terrace Movie Theater signs!
