About the family.
The Engel family, who are originally from the the Detroit, Michigan area, decided to relocate themselves along with their business (Oro Manufacturing Co.) to Monroe, NC. Two custom mid-century modern homes were built shortly thereafter on a large, wide acre spread, one for the parents and one for their son’s family.
About the architect.
WILLIAM DARE BOONE, JR. (1923-2004)
Boone was born in Winton NC. He graduated with a BA in architecture from NCSU in 1949. He worked for JA Malcolm; McMinn & Norfleet; J.J. Rowland; and Leslie Boney. In 1959, he went on his own. During his career, he did much of the Chowan College campus in Murfreesboro. Boone took on several partners for a short time in the 1960’s.
